Told by the elk
A hunting story and coloring book for young hunters 7 to 12. To us it is the wilderness. To the elk it is home, and they notice everything that does not belong.
Paperback, 8.5 x 11 inches, 54 pages.
Sprig is a young bull elk in his first September. Old Rack, the herd bull, has watched hunters for years. Nervous Nell knows every stump on the mountain. Sparky has never met a trail camera he did not love. Together they teach seven elk rules, and every one is a real lesson a young hunter can use this season.
The next book will be told by a different animal. A goldfish? A zoo animal? A farm animal? Grown-ups, cast a vote and we will tell you which animal won.
Buck Nicholson has spent more Septembers on the mountain than he would like to count, and has come home empty-handed enough times to learn how the elk think. He wrote this book so the next generation of hunters would start a few seasons ahead of where he did.
A note for grown-ups: this book teaches young hunters how elk think. It does not teach them to handle a bow or a rifle. Real hunting starts with a hunter education course and a grown-up who knows the way.
